I've always wanted the deed for one of the Qeynos mansions. Not so much to save the money (in this day and age, that pocket change, after all), but because with that deed, my house would stay available for everybody during my inevitable wanderings away from the game.

I just realized I have 80 packs saved up. Spitting on the dice and hoping for a last chance to finally get it! Thank you so much for the reminder!floschhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05784402621836933199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510920011443550663.post-45392120167538013442016-06-18T18:39:34.225+01:002016-06-18T18:39:34.225+01:00Yes, it's one of those things that won't m...Yes, it's one of those things that won't make much of a hole in the overall experience but that I'd rather have kept than have lost. On the other hand, I can still remember the song and dance EQ players made when LoN was introduced in the first place - you'd have thought it was the end of the game when it came in! EQ and EQ2 players never really like any kind of change, whether they're getting something new or losing something old.Bhagpusshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03499162165023939880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510920011443550663.post-75620941556419613732016-06-18T18:36:10.340+01:002016-06-18T18:36:10.340+01:00I didn't know CN had roots in Russia. That is ...I didn't know CN had roots in Russia. That is interesting indeed...

I only found out today, having gone back to playing EQ after a few months and therefore inevitably finding myself having to look stuff up, that Ngreth, Niami Denmother's husband, the long-time tradeskill dev who had been "let go" when SOE turned into DBG, has been re-hired. That I would count as a very optimistic sign, as was the appointment of the guy from Cryptic over at the DCUO office.

I'm not at all doom and gloom about the situation. I do believe that it would have been worse had Sony not been able to sell the business on. The mid and long term prospects really are a puzzler though.Bhagpusshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03499162165023939880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510920011443550663.post-47212212688340968602016-06-18T18:30:36.737+01:002016-06-18T18:30:36.737+01:00I do love opening the new packs for EQ2 loot since...I do love opening the new packs for EQ2 loot since some of my favorite appearance gear came from LoN. I forget about it a lot and then open a whole bunch of packs at once. I doubt I will miss it much since I would go months without even thinking about it. I will definitely not buy the new LoN random loot packs in the market store. I do not like the idea of randrom packs in general.Topauznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510920011443550663.post-60799340567078890292016-06-18T18:12:03.042+01:002016-06-18T18:12:03.042+01:00Yeah, the purchase of SOE by Columbus Nova is stil...Yeah, the purchase of SOE by Columbus Nova is still a bit inscrutable. It doesn't seem like a breakup, strip and sell transaction. But they are Russian I think, so the motive could be along with line of Jagex's purchase by the Chinese mining company: a way to get money out of the country, and invest in safer regions or industries abroad. (I live in Vancouver, B.C., which currently has a housing crisis because rich Chinese buy up real estate as a way to keep their money safe and growing).

MMORPGs, of course, are notoriously risky, though only in development. Once paid for, however, they appear to return a nice annual dividend. Which does seem to be how Columbus Nova is treating DBG thus far: close down the empty ancient titles (PS1, LoN), the risky titles in development (EQN), and those stuck in development twilight (Landmark). That leaves them with the perennials (EQ, EQ2, DCUO, PS2), and the new success (H1Z1).

They did make some high profile hires in the last few months though, so clearly they do seem to be planning something new. My suspicion is that any new games will not be MMORPGs, but more along the lines of smaller multiplayer games that run through Steam (a path Funcom is also taking in the face of relative MMORPG failures). These have far less risk, and since they are smaller, conceivably more prototypes can be thrown out.

So if one more vet from the first "golden age" of MMORPGs does in fact exit the scene, it does cede even more territory to the new wave of indies.

- SimonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
