I honestly don't know what to make of that song. At first I thought it was overly pretentious, but the longer I listen to it, the more I'm convinced that it was arty without taking itself seriously.
It's a cover. The original is by Purple Mountains, a side-project of David Berman, best known for being the creative force behind Silver Jews, which was actually just him, even though it sounds like it was a band. He killed himself in 2019. The original is even more melancholy than this version.
