Keeping track of that "reality" is important for economic purposes too. Essentially, though, I'm done with F2P though. It just encourages the bad element to troll for free.

As far as indicators, EQ2 didn't have an indicator either, but LoTRO had different frames for different levels, but you could use the plain one if you wanted.

I'm about to become a newbie in GW2, so this is timely. I'm happy to hear it's easily soloed. I haven't played any MMO in more than a year (I am now an expert in all the casual games like Mahjongg, yey for me). Kins and Guilds transferred and sold. Daybreak drove me out, I don't trust them. I'm thinking maybe I will go with WoW instead because it's less likely to become "maintenanced." Or is that "menaced"?

Well all that aside, I agree that Freeport was THE server to be on, and the detractors were jealous. Several people I played with were from Test and eventually went back there too. Until the Nostalgia server, anyway. Good times, and it looks like LoTRO is following suit. Several years ago though, they severely reduced the TP you can earn by doing deeds and you didn't mention that you have to own the content to do the deeds (Premium players can forget that because they probably bought it years ago). Some of the rewards are still very generous in areas largely missed by most of the players (Angmar and the Lossoth areas especially), but the common practice is to create a new toon, farm tp up to 300, delete and repeat. It seems that $10 is a base price for fluff in many MMOs these days and it just goes up from there. Of course, in GW2 you can do it all for gold, which makes me wonder where the Gems are coming from. Who would buy gems to convert them to gold?Bhagpusshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03499162165023939880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510920011443550663.post-86627661989323836022017-03-23T10:07:39.731+00:002017-03-23T10:07:39.731+00:00I was going to ask Armathyx that, too. Can't think of a visual indicator that differentiates between free and paid, unupgraded accounts though.

Also, re making a character on another server to play with someone, Guesting still works. Not sure if you can Guest to a Full server but unless both servers were full you could certainly do it. NOt sure why you'd need to, though, unless you're planning on doing WvW, which you can't do until level 60 anyway, by when someone would probably know if they liked the game enough to pay for the box. It really makes no difference what server your on - its all one big, happy Megaserver now!Bhagpusshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03499162165023939880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510920011443550663.post-61819886156520696272017-03-23T09:09:37.836+00:002017-03-23T09:09:37.836+00:00How can you spot a free player in GW2? Although I have a paid account, it's on a full server, so when a guildie from WoW wanted to try out GW2 and couldn't join my server, I made a free account and joined hers. I'm finding it frustrating that only very basic mats can be sold at auction on a free account, and my bagspace is always too small, but otherwise I'm not feeling any pain.

I have, however, realised that GW2 is more conducive to solo play than group play.Dàchénghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02994982502333811797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510920011443550663.post-51888809890678115752017-03-22T16:28:48.231+00:002017-03-22T16:28:48.231+00:00I'm not sure I've seen many freeplayers in...I'm not sure I've seen many freeplayers in GW2. Which surprises me as people can already play for so long without HoT content.

I've always found the prices in GW2 to be ludicrous. 10€ for a skin? 20€ for a server switch? And amazingly people still buy it, I wonder how much more they could raise the prices until it got boycotted? It's not just the TLE servers, which effectively ask people to pay for a lower level of content and service than they can get for free but also recent trends in the regular game, where some of the quest indicators and other modern innovations of the past few years have been rolled back.

The thing I would really like to see, though, is developers taking a much more granular approach to the entire design of their MMOs. It really doesn't have to be a one size fits all affair and players can be trusted to pace themselves provided they are given some structure and support.

The discount on expansions for subscribers is odd. I never thought about it before. On the other hand, can you imagine the outcry if subscribers had to pay full price and then there was some kind of special promotional offer to attract non-subscribers?Bhagpusshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03499162165023939880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1510920011443550663.post-12567085295048582592017-03-21T14:28:15.241+00:002017-03-21T14:28:15.241+00:00The Freeport server was definitely a rebirth momen...The Freeport server was definitely a rebirth moment for EQ2. Yes, it created a fracture in the game that SOE had to fix eventually by making all the standard servers F2P. But, for a while, the combo of new server and a mass of new players, both paid and free, made for a big success. The place felt alive, for lack of a better term. It wasn't (and still isn't) perfect, but it was pretty good.

And F2P as hard mode is something I don't think the devs still quite get. SOE/DGC has spent a lot of time swapping between carrot and stick to get people to give them money, often doing things that I think are pretty silly. For example, giving subscribers a discount on expansions seems really odd to me. I'd have to see some numbers about how many non-subscribers actually buy the expansion to make me think that was a worthwhile discount.Wilhelm Arcturushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07033496821708933394noreply@blogger.com
