Was definitely not expecting that Olivia Newton-John song. She would have been what, 16 or 17 at the time? I've only ever seen her from her late 20s onward, so that really broke my brain a little to see her so young.
The irony is that the Minogue sisters had a song more in vogue with that I'd expected out of Olivian Newton-John (disco-esque) than what Olivia did sing in the video above. Kylie is one of those people who occasionally entered the spotlight here in the states (at least that I've been aware of) but had a much longer and more successful career outside of the US. (You could insert the Pet Shop Boys here as well.) Still, being an absolute banger of a dance tune made 100 Degrees really awesome to crank up the volume to. (Good thing my wife was at work.)
I've never really "got" Kylie. She's a global superstar with Madonna-level presence (Granted, not in the USA for some reason but pretty much everywhere else.) but very little she's ever done has made any impression on me, other than the very early singles and some of the stuff she's done with alternative acts like Nick Cave.
As for Olivia Newton-John, she was a perpetual presence when I was in my teens and twenties thanks to Grease, mostly, as well as a constant presence in the charts over here but again, I never paid much attention. I never really thought about what she'd been doing before then - she was just suddenly there. From that clip, though, it seems she was a star - maybe even a child star - in Australia long before we got the benefit of her wholesome act.
