I'd say they're both broadly twee-pop (Or just twee or C86 or even, as we actually called it at the time, shambling.) It's the offshoot of post-punk that leaned heavily into the Postcard sound (Orange Juice, Aztec Camera et al) and brought in a lot of sixties' influence as well.
The NME used to produce an annual compilation they gave away with the music paper on cassette (Hence the "C" prefix.) and the one they did in 1986 was hugely influential. It was possibly my favorite time in music, close-run thing with 76-77 punk and a lot of stuff I post here carries echoes of it four decades later.
It morphed into indie-pop in the 90s (And arguably into Britpop, too.) but still survives as a separate genre, especially strongly in Spain for some reason, which is where Elefant Records is based. Then again, everything now sounds like it was influenced by something that came before so these bands may not even recognize that timeline as relevant.

ReplyDeleteThe Yearning's song sounds so 60s, and of course the woman's white outfit and hairdo in the first verse practically screams 60s.
Jacklen Ro, I can't really place the sound. At first I thought it might fit in the 90s, but for some reason I keep thinking late 70s - early 80s too.
